3D Juggling 510: Question and Answers

Claire writes: My daughter met Danny Boyle last week at a showing of his new film 127 Hours . Her friend posted a picture on Facebook and we were left with the question: Who IS Danny Boyle?  We worked it out in the end - although our answer was Director of Slumdog Millionaire and hers was Director of 127 Hours!

As James Thurber so wisely said, 'It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.' There's a lot of uncertainty around at the moment.  Knowing some of the questions and living with them can, in the end, produce a much more fruitful outcome than rushing straight for an answer.  Think about it...

Enterprise Allowance Scheme
David Cameron has announced a bid to turn up to 40,000 jobless people into successful entrepreneurs.  The Enterprise Allowance Scheme will provide finance supported by guidance and advice from local business mentors.  It will be piloted in Merseyside and rolled out across the country by the autumn.  If you know someone who might be interested their first step is likely to be working out what their business could be, or how to develop an interest into a business.  Tell them to give us a ring – we can help them think this through so that they have a flying start.

Juggling in 3D 389: Asking the right questions

If you're exploring how to use a coaching approach at work, we've now released 10 more places on Coaching for Excellence. Due to demand, there are now courses starting in September AND January.

Claire writes: 'I was speaking at a meeting the other day and a lady came up to me and asked: "Do you ever employ people?" At the time I was managing a number of questions from a small crowd that had gathered after the talk. So I answered - yes - but we hve no vacancies at the moment. I was tired and answered the question I was asked!

A much more effective question, or supplementary, of course is: Who do you know who I need to be talking to about....? Given a couple of minutes I could have suggested a few names and organisations. But I answered the question I was asked.

At another event last week, there was talk about speaking to a government minister. 'We may only have 5 minutes', said a participant 'we have to be clear what we're asking for.'

Which connects with my latest favourite quotation from Albert Einstein: “If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five minutes.”

The same stands when we plan to ask the question of someone else!'

Love this? Do us a favour and send it to five people. Who thinks like you? You could send it to someone who has asked you a great question!
