Juggling in 3D 415: Angels, Hubs and Fans
Claire writes: 'There are so many internet based job sites that we are meeting an increasing number of people whose search for a job, or for their dream job, is happening from their keyboard. It's true that the internet can connect you to thousands of adverts. It's also true, as well, that some things are better done in person. After all, companies hire people more than CVs and a timely conversation can be far more productive than a speculative application.
The key question is not 'have you any vacancies/opportunities'. It is 'Tell me about your job', Who else do you know who I need to be talking to about...?'. We're often asked how to start finding people to talk to. The answer is talk to people! It goes like this. In the circle of people you know already, some will be:
Acquaintances: they know who you are
Fans: they know you and think you have something to offer
Hubs: they are fans and also know loads of people. They may not go out and tell the world about you, but they may be very willing to make some introductions to people you can talk to. Take them out for coffee and ask them who they know who you need to be talking to about x...
Angels: are rare and valuable beings. You may only have one or two angels. They are fans and think that the skills and experience you have are worth talking about. They will tell other people about you - only if they know what you're looking for! Keep them up to date - through conversations.
Research is important. Knowing what's available is important. And getting out and speaking to people is critical. If you try this, you'll find it's not cold calling, either.
We often talk about this in a Career Makeover. If you need ideas and a kickstart about how to makeover your career book for one of our Masterclasses at One Life Live http://www.onelifelive.co.uk/master-classes-details.aspx?id=3
Love this? Do us a favour and send it to five people. Who thinks like you? You could send it to someone who is looking for a job.

Juggling in 3D 414: Procrastination
Claire writes: 'I am having one of those procrastinating days where - when the beginning goes in an unexpected direction and then it's hard to regroup and carry on. Reassured, therefore, by this quote from P.I. Tchaikovsky:
'We must always work, and a self-respecting artist must not fold his hands on the pretext that he is not in the mood. If we wait for the mood, without endeavouring to meet it half way, we easily become indolent and apathetic. We must be patient and believe that inspiration will come to those who can master their disinclination.'
So I am breaking the disinclination by writing this... because now I have begun doing something, anything, I will return to the task in hand!'
Love this? Do us a favour and send it to five people. Who thinks like you? You could send it to someone who is a procrastinator.

Juggling in 3D 413: Landscape Gardening
Claire writes: "In Lee Child's 'The Visitor', Gary - one of the crime profilers used to be a landscape gardener. In an off the cuff comment, another character notices that was a strange move. Gary responds: "It was relevant. It teaches you to see the big picture. To be patient."
Our skills are as transferable as we allow them to be... and then it's all in the marketing and how we communicate that to a potential employer. Take the helicopter view: If you were observing someone doing your job - from a distance - describe the skills which you use in a generic way. Once you are convinced they are transferable you will be able to convince someone else."

Juggling in 3D 412: WAIT
We still have a couple of spaces at the Action Learning Training on 29th January. The next London date will be April 1st, so book soon. There has also been a cancellation for the Coaching for Excellence starting in January and we will be able to offer one space at a concessionary rate - call Claire for more details.
Claire writes: "One of my supervisees arrived the other day with a piece of paper which he takes to training events. It says WAIT. Why Am I Talking? What a great tool to have in front of you in a group or a committee!
When she is having a conversation, Nancy Kline, asks people to indicate when they have done all their thinking lest she interrupt their silence before they are ready to move on."
"Don't talk unless you can improve the silence." Jorge Luis Borges
Love this? Do us a favour and send it to five people. Who thinks like you? You could send it to someone who... well - you decide!"

Juggling in 3D 411: Helicopter View
Happy New Year from all the team at 3D Coaching.
Claire writes: "We celebrated new year in Cologne and flew back to the UK late on Friday evening. Flying around London in the dark we were able to identify landmarks and get a good understanding of exactly where we were and what was happening. A very different experience from lunchtime on Friday when we were looking for somewhere to have lunch and wandered all over the place before finding somewhere to eat. It would have been handy to have had a helicopter to rise above the city and see where we really were!
Too often we get so close to the situation that we're in that we lose perspective. Rising above a situation - like we did in the plane - can help us to see things completely differently. So next time you feel stuck, imagine rising above the situation in a helicopter. As you get above the situation, what other people can you see who are also stakeholders? What other options come into view? Try it!
Love this? Do us a favour and send it to five people. Who thinks like you? You could send it to someone who would benefit from a completely new perspective"
