Lynn writes: 'Claire, Jane and I work very closely together. We are also good friends and Claire is my boss. Sometimes we need to receive coaching or supervision from each other. We need to be very careful to contract with each other which 'hat' we are wearing at any time during the conversation - it often changes!

The friend will say: How awful/ there there
The coach will say: Where do you want to get to in this conversation?
The manager will say: I need you to do this
and the supervisor will challenge and stretch your professional competency.

In the Jenny Jones poem 'When I am old I will wear purple' it's suggested that we try the hat on for size:
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old,
And start to wear purple!

Cut the nasty surprises out for those you talk to by both agreeing what hat you are wearing. If you're not sure, ask them!
