3D Juggling 450: My new man

Welcome to Su Blanch, our newest team member. Su is a facilitator and trainer and has a background in HR with extensive experience in Pharma. Claire is joining Tim Skipper today for 20 miles of his canal walk from Milton Keynes to Welshampton to raise money for The Severn Hospice. If you'd like to cheer her on by sponsoring Tim, the link is http://www.justgiving.com/SHcanalotto2/

Lynn now has new man in her life. Her elder son Loren has hit 18 and if it has brought new challenges to the household.

Lynn writes “When Loren quite rightly demands to be treated as an adult, at times he is a little boy learning. We recently had a visit to the doctor's followed by organisation of an x ray and in the same day an appointment at the bank.Loren asked me to come with him on all three visits and I expected the usual routine of going in with him and leading the talking. He had other ideas. At the doctors he asked me to wait in the waiting room. The telephone call organising the x-ray had me in the room. Finally at the bank I was invited into the room and included.

Afterwards he thought I was cross with him. In fact I was confused about my role. It is right and proper that he takes control of his life but why was I at the doctors and in the room for the phone call? And having done those what was different at the bank?

Once we talked it became clear that he is in transition and that he needs to build his confidence. Thus Mum close by means he can take risks with backup, ask if he needs to, but have a go first.

How often with staff do we take their asking as a need for solution? I wonder how often people I managed would have been able to “have a go” if I had simply been close by?

Lauren taught me a valuable lesson about supporting and not solving as Jacob Bronowski, Mathematician and Biologist said: “We are all afraid for our confidence, for the future, for the world. That is the nature of the human imagination. Yet every man, every civilization, has gone forward because of its engagement with what it has set itself to do.”

Love this? Do us a favour and send it to five people. Who thinks like you? You could send it to someone who needs simply to be close by.

3D Juggling 449: Wearing Purple

Clare Townsend is offering low cost coaching at the office in Letchworth and Lynn is offering low cost coaching supervision. Places are limited. Call us on 01462 483798 or email info@3dcoaching.com to find out more. Also Action Learning Set Facilitator Training in the north is in Hull on 25th November.

Lynn writes: 'Claire, Jane and I work very closely together. We are also good friends and Claire is my boss. Sometimes we need to receive coaching or supervision from each other. We need to be very careful to contract with each other which 'hat' we are wearing at any time during the conversation - it often changes!

The friend will say: How awful/ there there
The coach will say: Where do you want to get to in this conversation?
The manager will say: I need you to do this
and the supervisor will challenge and stretch your professional competency.

In the Jenny Jones poem 'When I am old I will wear purple' it's suggested that we try the hat on for size:
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old,
And start to wear purple!

Cut the nasty surprises out for those you talk to by both agreeing what hat you are wearing. If you're not sure, ask them!

3D Juggling 447: That Monday Morning Feeling

Claire writes: "In last Saturday's Casualty on BBC1, the plot unfolded by different players telling their part of the same story. At work, how often do we tell the story for someone else through interpretation, assumption, presumption or simply for speed? The same facts can look completely different when told from different perspectives.

Last Sunday, I woke up in the night to hear Mike make a terrible noise, and saw him sit up and fall out of bed unconscious. Once I had established that he really was unconscious and not asleep, I dialled 999. Until we arrived at the hospital, he was still very incoherent and so I told the story of what I saw and heard to the ambulance crew and the medics. Once he came round and said he had cramp in his leg, it was a couple of hours while they made sure he hadn't had a stroke. All the tests were fine and home and the cool light of morning revealed a large bump on his head. Recovered from the shock of the night's events, he had remembered his side of the story. Woke up with awful cramp, sat up to stretch, fell out of bed and knocked himself out. Same facts. Different perspective. And far less serious although painful.

How can we empower people in our organisations to tell their own story?"
