Juggling in 3D 359: Strictly Come Swimming
Welcome to our new subscribers this week. We've carried on the updates at the website and there's a much refined handout on CV writing http://www.3dcoaching.com/career_coaching.phtml Remember that Juggling is now available on the blog http://3dcoaching.blogspot.com/ where we would love to hear your opinions.
Claire writes: 'Remind me never to do the advanced driving test. My current attempt at improving my swimming has left me feeling like an early evictee of Strictly COme Dancing. Since the summer, I've been swimming at least three times a week and have never really mastered breastroke. I tried to find some videos to improve my stroke on the internet, but managed to find little of use beyond the spoof Synchronised Swimming 2004 clip on youtube.com. Some things are better done in person, so my birthday present was a couple of stroke improver lessons. The teacher was great. She affirmed that my arms were doing the right thing. My legs, she said needed improvement.
We spent half the lesson focussing on my legs until I was doing them well, with a float. Then it was time to put them together. It was good that the pool was empty! Three weeks on, I am still in that in between stage where I don't want to go back to bad habits, but I can only put the arms and legs together for a moment. "You're doing twice as many strokes as you need to. You're making it too complicated" said the teacher.
Simplicity is an art. The same is true when we work with people as they develop professionally and personally - through coaching or facilitation. It's often the simplest way of working which is most effective - but it can be the hardest to learn.'

Juggling in 3D: 358 Seeing Things Differently
Diane writes: "It is the most perfect of November days here today. The sky is clear and blue and the sun is shining brightly. As I came in through the college just now I met one of our students who comes originally from the Congo. I said what a lovely day it and he looked puzzled. "It is freezing!" he said. "Yes, but it is lovely", I replied. His face broke into a wide smile, "You English and your weather!"
The thing was he and I were coming at our experience of the weather from different perspectives. He was longing for warmth and I was glad it wasn't raining.
In coaching it is good to come at issues from different perspectives in order to gather new insight into a perplexing situation. Time management is a particular area where a new perspective can transform a situation. I love diaries and year planners and enjoy keeping them up to date. Some of you reading this will be shuddering at the very mention of the word diary. A friend of mine desperately wanted to get her working schedule organized but found wall planners a real turn off. Instead she drew a picture of a river with tributaries and a beautiful fertile delta. There were bridges, a dam, stepping stone, lakes ponds and puddles. This became her wall planner for the coming months. Drawing this picture released her creativity and unblocked her stuckness. She could see where future bottlenecks were, where the dry, barren times might come and she could plan accordingly. She had thought her problem was an inability to plan, looking at it from a different perspective showed her she can plan very effectively, but the last thing she needs to help her is a sterile wall planner.
Are you saw you are looking at things from the best direction. What could a change of perspective do for you?"

Juggling in 3D 357: Valuing intuition
Diane writes: "A couple of weeks ago I needed to contact one of our coaches. I called her home number, work number and mobile. Moments after I had left my last message my phone rang and it was the person I had been trying to call. She had just thought it would be good to talk with me - she had no idea I had left three messages! This is something that happens to me very often. A person comes into my mind and moments later they ring. I wake up thinking about someone, drop them a card and then find out that the card arrived at just the right moment for them. This is intuition.
Some people have trouble believing in intuition. They think it is about guessing or getting lucky. The same people have even more difficulty in trusting intuition. Facts are tangible, real and verifiable; intuition is hard to get hold of, perhaps even a bit fluffy.
I want to encourage you to use and develop your intuition. Listen to your own inner voice and to the other messages your body is sending out about the people you meet and speak with. I am not advocating using intuition alone; intuition needs to be backed up by facts. Intuition is an important way of knowing.
In coaching we use intuition a great deal. Good coaches offer insights from intuition to their clients without attachment. If the insight lands, the client can pick it up and develop the idea. Last week I was working with a client who was struggling to find a way forward. Suddenly the word - systemic - came into my mind, I held it back until I felt I had to offer my intuition to the client. 'I am wondering if this problem is systemic?' Pause and then the light came on for my client, 'Yes! That's it!' and off she went into exploring her ideas for organisational change. How can you better value intuition?"

Juggling in 3D 356: Reframing the Picture
Diane writes: "Recently I was working with a client who had become really stuck with a particular situation. She said it was impossible, she could not possibly find a way through that would enable her to make progress with what was a very complex and difficult issue. I had tried several different approaches through my questions in the hope she would find a way of unlocking her stuckness. Then I remembered something that one of our coaches had told me only the day before. It was a way of reframing the issue so that one could look at it and work with it from a different perspective.
Imagine yourself as a character in a film. In the film you are yourself, at this moment, with the issue you are feeling you can make no progress with. Change your role. Now you are watching the film from the projectionist's booth. As you watch tell the character in the film what she should do.
My client did this exercise and within a few moments she had seen from this objective perspective exactly what she needed to do. She became very animated and very directive with herself! She had asked me before the exercise to write down what she said to her celluloid self, which I did. She was very excited about what she had seen and about the advice she had given herself. Now she is busy acting on it!
We often wrestle with issues and feel there is no way forward. The way forward might be to take a step back and look in from a new perspective."

Juggling in 3D 355: Taking up the role
Welcome to all our new subscribers. From this week, you can read Juggling in 3D from our blog http://3dcoaching.blogspot.com/ There's also a chance to post messages and read about new information and ideas. If you like what you see, please forward the link to others you know who will be interested.
Diane writes: Last week I took part in an exercise where I was given a sheet of paper with five concentric circles. Between the edge of each circle and in the very centre there was space to write. I was invited to write words in each of the circles that describe me. The facilitator pointed out that each time we do an exercise like this we will put words in different places, those closest to the centre are the most important descriptors each time we do it. I really enjoyed the exercise and was interested to see which words were closest to the centre. Suddenly a new word leapt into my brain, "Mother-in Law".
Two weeks ago we celebrated our younger daughter's wedding. It was a truly splendid affair which everyone tells me they enjoyed immensely. There was a very moving piece in the ceremony where the officiant helped my husband to hand over our daughter into the new relationship. There was all kinds of symbolism to be seen in the way each person's hands were linked. For me at that moment a new family unit was created. I became a "Mother-in-Law" and I have to work out with our daughter and her husband what that role will involve.
It is not often that we are reminded in such a wonderful and dramatic way about taking up a new role. It made me stop to reflect how often in the past I have failed to notice I am taking up a new role and perhaps not given it the attention it deserved. I feel it is worth asking ourselves the question everyday, "Who am I today? What roles do I need to prepare for?" I shall certainly be paying attention to how I take up my new role as "Mother-in Law"; it is one which needs to be worked at!
